Dr. Olson was born and raised in Saskatoon. He has two degrees from the University of Saskatchewan: B.A. Honours (with High Honours; 2002) and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology (2008). He completed his 1st year predoctoral clinical internship at the Center for Psychological Services at the University of Ottawa in 2007-2008, where his clinical training focused on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) interventions. Following completion of his Ph.D., Dr. Olson moved to Montreal to complete a two year postdoctoral research fellowship through McGill University. The fellowship focused on psychotherapy research, primarily from psychodynamic and CBT frameworks. He returned to Saskatoon to join the FIT for Active Living team in August 2010 to do the SGI tertiary level rehabilitation. In 2017 Dr. Olson slowly transitioned over to the Kinetik Rehabilitation program, where he has worked fulltime since September 2017. Dr. Olson primarily works from a CBT framework in his current clinical work, but also is well versed in psychodynamic psychotherapy and research. He is a registered Doctoral Psychologist with the Saskatchewan College of Psychologists (#817) and has had an Authorized Practice Endorsement for diagnosis since April 2011.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Olson enjoys conducting psychology research. His general research interests are personality assessment and psychotherapy. Much of his previous research has been focused on defense mechanisms, which are automatic ways that individuals cope with stressors. Dr. Olson is an author on seven peer-reviewed journal articles as well as two book chapters. Since 2001 he has been an author on 73 national or international research presentations given at conferences of organizations including the American Psychoanalytic Association, Anxiety and Depression Association of America, Canadian Psychological Association, Society for Personality Assessment, and the Society for Psychotherapy Research. He continues to be involved in a variety of research projects in his spare time.
